Hi Everyone,
What engine do you think would be best suited for a sports style road car.
There are so many choices I am a bit overwhelmed. I am looking for a relatively mid range engine in both power and cost.
Any help will be much appreciated.
There's way too many choices out there Yohann.
Can you give us an idea on HP range and your budget?
Thanks
Jeff
First of all i have had no experience with buying an engine therfore I am going of very little i know.
The engine car will be a mid engine location so i was wondering either a V configuration or an inline.
The average cost of an engine is about $2500–3000 i think.
On the HP side 100-200 (I am not sure, lack of experience)
Maybe try a Subaru WRX engine. Boxter type engine. 4cyl. Lots of aftermarket parts and forum groups that swap them into numerous types of vehicles. Fairly easy to install and upgrade.
Another other thoughts from the group?
I think it depends where the vehicle would be built and where the primary markets will be. You would want to choose an engine that is commonly available and has a good network of parts suppliers in these areas.
Toyota's 3.5L V6 is a good option. It has good power to weight, it's ridiculously reliable and it's available everywhere in the world. Not much aftermarket tuning potential but still Lotus chose it for the Evora.
Ford's 2L 4cyl Ecoboost engine (from Focus ST) has heaps tuning potential and fairly good package space. Also available quite widely around the world.
Another consideration may be choosing an engine configuration that can be replaced easily. ie you could switch your design from an inline 4 to another inline 4 if a better/newer engine becomes available or if you lose supply of the old engine. A V6 likewise. The WRX engine is fantastic, but due to it's layout may require major redesign if you need to change to another engine later.
Hope this helps
Hi in your case i think a mitsubishi eclipse 2nd generation is the ideal ...
150 hp 2.0cc 16/20 valves i don´t remenber but i remenber its a very good engine
Lots of choices meet that criteria... the simplest of which will be a naturally aspirated inline 4.
Thank you for all your help everyone.
From what i can gather from this is that i should go for an inline 4 as it generally would be generally lot easier to use. However I am still a bit unsure which one would be the best what should I be looking for as the defining features for a good engine such as HP and cc.
I am not looking for an over the top engine.
Sorry for asking again i am a beginner at this.
Honda K series.
The K24 can make 260-275hp with a tune, headers, intake, and other support.
Turbo charged they can handle 600hp on the stock bottom end all day before breaking. (With proper tuning, cooling, and supporting mods)
You can buy a K24 for $500-1200.
Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the help so far, I have another question to ask. For all of these suggested engines would it be best to get it from a donor car or to buy them separately.
I am currently thinking of going with an Honda engine as a there seems to be easier to get my hands on.
If it is easier too get it from a donor car, which ones are a good option?
My specs i am looking for:
k series or b series all dayyy
go for honda k-series, for a mid engined car (i assume it would be a custom framed car) you can build the frame to pickup on the factory subframe mount locations, that way you can use the entire drive train from a donor car just mounted at the back powering the rear wheels instead of the front
